Stables to Statement Hats: College Paths Inspired by the Kentucky Derby

Written by Jamie Kirby | Apr 28, 2025 3:10:16 PM

The first Saturday in May. Whether you're all about the horses or more into the fashion scene, there's something special about the tradition and energy of Derby Day. In that spirit, we’re taking a look at some college programs that connect to the world of equestrian sports. There are quite a few schools with riding teams and equine majors, but the ones we’re featuring here have unique specialities. And if your Derby dreams are more about designing the perfect statement hat than training a champion horse, keep reading - we’ve got a bonus program for you, too!

St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (Saint Mary of the Woods, IN)

St. Mary-of-the-Woods College offers several paths in their Equine Studies program, including a B.S. in Equine Studies with concentrations available in Equine Business Management, Equine Training and Instruction, Equine Science and Equine Pre-Vet Science. They also have minors available in Equine Studies, Equine Science, Equine Assisted Therapy, Equine Breeding Management, and Equine Therapeutic Riding.

A unique program, however, is their online associate’s degree in Equine Racetrack Management, which is all about giving you real-world skills to break into the racing industry. Think racetrack operations, event planning, and even managing the surface horses run on (yes, that’s a whole science in itself!)

The racetrack management program dives into both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing, helping you understand the differences in how each breed is trained, raced, and managed. You'll also explore everything from race-day logistics to marketing strategies, all taught by faculty with industry experience

Even though it’s online, this program isn’t just about reading and quizzes. You'll get practice through simulations, case studies, and interactive projects, so you’re not just learning the theory, you’re learning how to do the job. Whether your dream is running the show behind the scenes or building a career in racing management, this program could be a great fit.

University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ)

University of Arizona’s Animal Science program has several speciality areas found at many colleges: animal industry, equine, or science pre-professional studies. However, they also have an option for a Bachelor of Science in Animal Studies with a Race Track Industry emphasis - the only program of its kind focused on the racing industry.

Students in the Race Track Industry program can choose between two career-focused tracks: one geared toward race track management and regulation, and another centered on the racing and breeding side of the industry. Whichever path you choose, you'll blend classroom learning with hands-on experience that gives you a real feel for how the racing world operates day to day.

In addition to classroom experiences, students complete internships at racetracks, breeding farms, and with top trainers and racing organizations throughout the country and even internationally. Whether your passion lies in managing race day operations or raising the next generation of champions, this program puts you right in the action.

University of Kentucky (Lexington, KY)

If you’re serious about working with horses, it’s hard to top Lexington as a location. Known as the “Horse Capital of the World”, this is where Thoroughbred farms and racing culture are part of everyday life, and the University of Kentucky puts you right in the center of it all.

UK’s Equine Science and Management program combines the science with the business side of the equine industry, including breeding, raising horses, marketing, leadership, and industry operations. Students in the program come from all over the U.S. (and beyond!), bringing a wide range of horse experience and backgrounds. They choose one of three emphasis areas: Equine Science, Equine Management and Industry, or Communications and Leadership, which allows you to dive deeper into your specific interests while setting you up for success in whatever part of the industry you’re aiming for after graduation.

Where UK really stands out is equine research. The Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center is the only scientific institute in the US with nearly all faculty conducting full-time research in equine health and diseases. For students interested in research, this is an ideal place for internships and research projects. That’s not all - additional equine research is also being done by many other departments on campus, for a truly interdisciplinary approach.

*Bonus* Thanks to special agreements, residents from Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia, and West Virginia may enroll in the University of Kentucky Equine Science and Management program at in-state tuition rates!

University of Louisville (Louisville, KY)

University of Louisville has an Equine Industry program within the College of Business - the only undergraduate equine program in the world located in an AACSB accredited college of business.

The EIP prepares students to lead and innovate in all areas of the horse industry. Located just a mile from the legendary Churchill Downs, UofL’s program combines small classes, personalized advising, and hands-on learning with a solid foundation in business administration. Students complete internships, gain field experience, and often find themselves building relationships with some of the most prominent names in the industry thanks to the university’s prime location in the heart of Kentucky’s horse country.

Students study a specialized curriculum that covers everything from equine economics and marketing to equine law, taxation, and financial management. You’ll also hear directly from professionals in the field through an ongoing industry speaker series, giving you valuable insights (and connections!) before you even graduate.

If the business side of the equine industry is your passion, this program could be the perfect match. It's a strong fit for students who want to bring strategy, structure, and leadership to the fast-paced world of horse racing.

BONUS: Are you more interested in the hats and fashion of the Derby than the horses? We also have a program for you!

Fashion Institute of Technology (New York, NY)

Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has a program in Millinery (hat design)! This specialized program was created in response to a growing demand for high-quality, handcrafted hats, and it’s all about teaching students how to design and construct show-stopping headwear with professional-level skill.

Over the course of four semesters, students take a sequence of six hands-on courses covering everything from hat blocking and fabric construction to cold weather styles, men’s hats, bridal and special occasion pieces, and creative design techniques. While the certificate program is not a full undergraduate major, the courses are available to undergraduates to take if desired. Whether your goal is to work in fashion, costume design, or start your own line of Derby-worthy headwear, this program gives you the skills to make it happen.
